Abstract:

Imaging has become an indispensable tool in biology and medicine for basic research and clinical practice. Biomedical image analysis offers powerful methods and systems to uncover valuable information from image data. The specific image characteristics and problems in these fields have motivated the development of novel concepts and algorithms. This talk emphasizes the fundamental research view of biomedical imaging and discusses a number of challenges and related concepts and algorithms, including machine learning based approaches. In addition to the information processing view, the imposing development in biomedical imaging is also a driving force for advances in life sciences from a Galisonian perspective.
